When travelling from Johannesburg :
  • You can either exit on the N17 from JHB South passing through Secunda, onto Bethal
  • OR, You can exit on the N12 via Witbank, pass through the Middleburg toll gate, take the R35 off- ramp towards Bethal.
  • From Bethal, travel to Ermelo, to Piet Retief, to Pongola.
  • From Pongola, travel for 27km, turn right off the N2 highway, immediately before the Golela/Swaziland junction.
  • Travel on the dirt road for 1km to Tamboti Ridge homestead.

When travelling from Pretoria :
  • Take the N4 towards Witbank, pass through the Middleburg toll gate, take the R35 off- ramp towards Bethal.
  • From Bethal, travel to Ermelo, to Piet Retief, to Pongola.
  • From Pongola, travel for 27km, turn right off the N2 highway, immediately before the Golela/Swaziland junction.
  • Travel on the dirt road for 1km to Tamboti Ridge homestead.

When travelling North from Durban :
  • On the N2 Highway, 40km past the town of Mkuze, turn left directly off the N2 about 50m after the Golela/Swaziland border post turn off which heads off right.
  • Continue for 1km on the dirt road to the Tamboti Ridge homestead.

When travelling South through Swaziland :
  • Exiting at the Golela boder post, continue along this road towards the N2 highway, 10km.
  • You will reach a T-junction at the N2 Highway, turn right and then almost immediately left onto the dirt road at the Tamboti entrance, which is at the end of a truck lay by.
  • Continue for 1km on the dirt road to the Tamboti Ridge homestead.

Alternatively: a longer but quieter and most scenic route

  • Take the N12 or N4 past Middleburg until they join
  • Exit at the R33 to Carolina. There are a few left and right turns as you head through Carolina, Warburton, to Amsterdam and then to Piet Retief, but keep following the R33 signs.
  • From Piet Retief, travel to Pongola.
  • From Pongola, travel for 27km, turn right off the N2 highway, immediately before the Golela/Swaziland junction.
  • Travel on the dirt road for 1km to Tamboti Ridge homestead.

When travelling South from Kruger Park, Crocodile Bridge :

  • The quickest route is through Swaziland using the Mananga, border post.
  • Continue south towards Big Bend, to the Lavumisa border post.
  • From here, travel for only 10 km into KwaZulu Natal where you will come to a T-Junction
  • Turn right onto the N2 and you will see the Tamboti Ridge entrance immediately on your left.

Climate :
  • There really is not a bad time to visit, as the climate is subtropical with a tendency to become hot and humid in the high summer from October to February.
  • The best time to visit Zululand is from March to June when we experience what we term our "champagne weather" the days are warm yet dry with low humidity and no wind.
  • Temperatures in Summer are on average 35°C.
  • Winters are very mild from min 10°C and averaging at 22°C.

Malaria :
  • The area is listed as a low risk malaria area and unless you are travelling to high risk areas such as Kruger park or the coastal areas such as Kosi Bay, it is not imperative that you take prophylactics.
  • The malaria risk has been improved in many areas due to constant treatment and spraying of rural houses.
